LP SmartSide Siding in Southwest Washington

LP SmartSide gives Southwest Washington homeowners the warmth of a real wood-grain exterior with engineering that handles our climate. The treated engineered-wood strands resist moisture and impact, the boards are lighter and less brittle than fiber cement, and LP backs the product with its well-known 5/50 prorated limited warranty. We install it over a rain-screen assembly so the wall can drain and dry through our long, wet winters.

Why Engineered Wood Works in Southwest Washington

Real Wood-Grain Look

SmartSide's deep texture gives the warmth of wood siding — a favorite on Craftsman and traditional Pacific Northwest homes — without the rot and upkeep of natural cedar.

Treated for Moisture & Impact

The engineered-wood strands are treated to resist moisture and stand up to impact through our long wet seasons, far better than untreated wood.

Lighter & Less Brittle

SmartSide is lighter than fiber cement and less prone to chipping, which makes it easier to handle for custom trim details and gable accents.

Backed by LP's 5/50 Warranty

LP's well-known 5/50 prorated limited warranty stands behind the product; we provide the official documents so you have the exact current terms.

Our SmartSide Installation Process

1

Consultation & Selection

We review profiles, textures, and color approaches, and help you decide between field-painted and pre-finished SmartSide for your home.

2

Measurement & Order

The home is measured and materials, including trim and flashing, are ordered to complete the wall system.

3

Tear-Off & Prep

Old siding is removed, the sheathing is checked and repaired where moisture has gotten in, and house wrap, a rain-screen gap, and flashing are installed.

4

Installation & Finish

SmartSide board and trim are installed per LP's guidelines, sealed, and — if field-painted — coated for a finished, protected exterior.

LP SmartSide Deep Dives

Field-Painted vs. Pre-Finished SmartSide

SmartSide comes primed for field painting or with a factory pre-finish. Pre-finished boards arrive with a controlled factory coating that holds up to our long wet seasons and holds color longer, and they eliminate the immediate painting step. Field painting offers a wider color range and lets us match an existing scheme exactly.

Whichever you choose, we seal every cut edge to prevent moisture wicking — an important detail with engineered wood in a climate this wet — and detail the trim so the finish holds up over the years.

Behind the Siding: House Wrap & Sheathing Repair

As with any re-side, the wall system behind SmartSide matters as much as the boards. After tear-off we inspect and repair the sheathing, install house wrap with taped seams and a rain-screen gap, and flash every window, door, and penetration so water is directed out of the wall rather than into it.

Proper flashing integrated with the house wrap is the single biggest factor in keeping moisture out through a wet Southwest Washington winter — and it's exactly the step that gets shortcut on failed installations we're called to replace.

How SmartGuard® Makes Engineered Wood Last

What separates LP SmartSide from the old wood and hardboard siding that failed on so many older homes is how it's made. LP treats the wood to the core through its SmartGuard® process, a four-part treatment LP describes as: zinc borate to resist termites and fungal decay, waxes for water resistance, adhesive resins for impact strength, and a water-resistant overlay bonded to the surface.

That treatment is why engineered wood holds up in our wet climate where older wood siding swelled and rotted. LP points to a 20-plus-year exposure test in a harsh climate as evidence the boards stay structurally sound over decades — but only when cut edges are sealed and the material is installed and maintained to spec, which is exactly how we install it.

LP's 5/50 Warranty Explained

LP backs SmartSide with its 5/50 prorated limited warranty: a 5-year period of 100% labor-and-material replacement, followed by prorated material coverage out to 50 years. It's one of the most recognizable warranties in engineered-wood siding.

That's LP's warranty on the product; the exact current terms and conditions are in LP's documents, which we provide with your project. Our installation is covered separately by NorthBank Remodel's own workmanship warranty — and because a manufacturer warranty only holds when the siding is installed correctly, sealing cut edges and flashing every opening is standard on our jobs.

LP SmartSide Siding FAQs

How is LP SmartSide different from fiber cement?

SmartSide is treated engineered wood rather than cement. It's lighter and less brittle, tends to cut and handle cleanly, and gives a deep wood-grain look. Both perform well in our climate when installed over a proper rain-screen gap; the decision usually comes down to look, feel, warranty, and budget. We walk through the trade-offs for your home.

What does the 5/50 warranty mean?

It's LP's standard limited warranty structure — broadly, a substantial full-coverage period followed by a longer prorated term, up to 50 years. We provide the official warranty documents so you have the exact terms; we don't restate specific coverage figures we can't guarantee are current.

Does engineered wood siding hold up to our rain?

It's specifically treated to resist the moisture that untreated wood siding is vulnerable to, and installing it over a rain-screen gap gives the wall a way to drain and dry. We'll be candid if a particular exposure — a north-facing wall with poor drainage, for example — calls for extra flashing detail or a different material.

Do I have to repaint it?

Pre-finished SmartSide arrives with a factory coating, while field-painted installations use quality exterior paint. Either way you'll eventually repaint as with any painted exterior, but the treated substrate is built to hold a finish well.

How is LP SmartSide different from James Hardie fiber cement?

SmartSide is treated engineered wood; Hardie is fiber cement. SmartSide is lighter and less brittle, cuts and handles cleanly for custom trim, and gives a warmer, deeper wood-grain look. Hardie is heavier, more rigid, and holds its factory color the longest. Both resist moisture and impact well when installed rain-screen style. The decision usually comes down to look, weight, warranty preference, and budget.

What does LP's 5/50 warranty cover?

LP's 5/50 prorated limited warranty provides a 5-year period of 100% labor-and-material replacement, followed by prorated material coverage through year 50. The exact current terms are in LP's warranty documents, which we provide with your project; our installation carries our own separate workmanship warranty.

Does SmartSide need to be repainted?

Pre-finished SmartSide arrives with a factory coating; field-painted installations use quality exterior paint. Either way you'll eventually repaint, as with any painted exterior, but the treated substrate is engineered to hold a finish well through Southwest Washington's long wet seasons — typically longer between repaints than untreated wood siding.
